The Lady in the Library

Original gold frame

Signature initials altered

J.W. Waterhouse was the son a accomplished painters (William and Isabella Waterhouse) and married a painter (Ester Kenworthy).  His Half sister was a frequent model. There are on record 118 of his paintings. This one is not listed as far as I know. It would appear as if the original signature was "M. Waterhouse" (Mary Waterhouse?), later altered to appear like "J.W. Waterhouse". The signature is barely legible and signed in the dark area. This is consistent with his other works. The age is consistent at around circa 1900. There is a dot at the end of the signature. From time to time, he signed this way. The model in the library appears to be his half-sister, Mary. She was also the model for The Lady of Shalott. It is unknown why she would sign the painting.

Ramos Catalan  (chilean)

Cajon de cordillera / Rio Blanco / Chile

Chilean Painter
He was born in 1888. Died in 1961.

He was one of the first chilean painters that took the typical chilean rural landscape as his main subject. In most of his paintingsit appears the typical rural chilean hut and a large clay flowerpots.
Mountains, the sky with some clouds on and a beautiful
sunset are also always founded in his paintings.
He also painted portraits, seascapes and sea battles.

Ramos Catalan signed his artworks in three different ways:as Ramos C., as Ramos Catalan written with heavy traces and as Ramos Catalan in a more light writing.
The reason for this was the personal valoration that he
assigned to each of his paintings.Nowadays, the most valuated ones are the paintings
signed as Ramos C.
